Where Eagles Dare
Posted by Gail Cobile on August 31, 2014, 7:14 am

There comes a time in one's life when you realize that the space you occupy on this big blue marble is no longer where you need to be or where you're going to be....Time, Place, Opportunity are all relative and you wonder how you’ll ever reach your goal and just what is your goal?!

We decided, after much soul-searching and practical applications, that we would retire to my husband’s home in the Philippines.  Great.  Not bad.  We've lived in the beautiful state of Virginia for 26 years.  The decision wasn't made in a moment of nostalgia nor one of wanting to see what it was like to live in a country without a change of seasons...excluding monsoon season, of course! Nevertheless, there are a gazillion things to do, many more decisions to make and the process, though daunting, still provides a sense of great anticipation.

In one respect, it's difficult for me, a grandmother, retired, to think of being so far away from my kids and my grand babies...growing up much faster than I would have liked.  I am also a "dyed-in-the-wool" American patriot.  When I was in school, even from my elementary days, we were taught to respect our flag, recite the Pledge of Allegiance every morning before we began our classroom activities.  Having grown up with that sense of pride and acknowledging all those members of my family that have fought and died to preserve this nation, I get a twinge of sadness to know that I can leave it behind to begin a new life.  Does that mean I love it less?  Of course not.  I will watch with wonder and prayerfully ask that she be led by wise men and women to continue the course set for her by our forefathers.  We could go on for days on this subject and perhaps at a later time, we can discuss some of the issues I see.

I walk around our home and look at "things" we have accumulated.  Oh my gosh!!  I see a gigantic yard sale in our future and perhaps, more than one.  Other than very personal items and clothing will be the only items going.  My husband has assured me that I will be able to replace all large and small kitchen gadgets, appliances, and furniture for any room in our new home.  Okay.  I'm good with that.  Yesterday, I found myself looking at the pictures I have hanging in my "mini-Louvre" or the hallway where I pass by the faces of those I love so much everyday.  Yep, the pictures, or most of them will find a new wall on the other side of the planet.

My husband's relatives that have visited us here in Virginia are my lifeline to ignoring loneliness and homesickness.  I see one or two...or three major shopping trips to Ayala as hubby quietly rolls his eyes and shakes his head.  Redecorating all those rooms...oh my, my.  Sweet Pea must realize that, ultimately, this was his idea and I love tagging along with the love of my life.  Therefore, where he goes, I shall follow.  New adventures, new places, new friends, new everything...  I would also depend on those "old" friends to stay in touch!!

How would you feel about starting over, in a strange land...and what would you do to make the adjustment easier?  I would love to hear your answers.

Until the next time....
