Given the collapse of Marvel's proposed live-action Punisher TV series a couple of months ago, it could be some time before we get to see the gun-toting vigilante back on the screen. Fortunately, former Frank Castle Thomas Jane had a treat for fans of the anti-hero at the San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday, helping to ease the wait by reprising his role from 2004 movie for a superb unofficial short film entitled Dirty Laundry.
Created by Jane and comic book artist Tim Bradstreet - who has previously worked on poster designs for both 2004's The Punisher and 2008's Punisher: War Zone, as well as numerous Punisher comic book titles - Dirty Laundry also features an appearance from Ron Perlman (Hellboy, Blade II) and sees Jane's Castle unleashing his own supremely violent brand of punishment on a group of drug dealing pimps.
Best of all, it's now available to watch online, and you can see it right here... (Turn on your system's speakers. Download of the video may entail a wait time depending on the speed of your Internet connectivity. Warning: Some scenes are appropriate for mature audiences only. Parental discretion is highly recommended.)
Since The Punisher's last outing - which saw Ray Stevenson replacing Jane for Punisher: War Zone - the rights to the character have reverted back to Marvel Studios, but his future looks uncertain at the moment. It's hard to imagine that a Punisher film is high on Marvel's list of priorities, considering that all three previous efforts to bring Castle to the big screen have been pretty disappointing. There's also the small matter of the level of violence required to do The Punisher justice, and I'm not sure that's in fitting with the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
I mean, could you really see Frank Castle lining up alongside Earth's Mightiest Heroes in The Avengers 2?
